Pecan pie dump cake is what happens when the flavor of classic pecan pie meets the ease of a one-pan cake. It’s warm, gooey, crunchy on top, and ridiculously simple to throw together. No mixing bowls, no fuss—just layer, bake, and serve. It’s perfect for holidays, potlucks, or any time you want a co
1 can (21 oz) pecan pie filling (or 2 cups homemade pecan pie filling)
1 box yellow cake mix (about 15.25 oz)
1 cup chopped pecans (to boost crunch; optional but recommended)
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (plus 2–3 extra tablespoons if you like richer topping)
1/3 cup brown sugar (light or dark, for caramel depth)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional but lovely)
Pinch of salt
Nonstick spray or extra butter for greasing the pan
Serving ideas: Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce
Method
Preheat and prep the pan. Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray or a thin coat of butter.
Build the base. Add the pecan pie filling to the dish and spread it into an even layer. Stir in the vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt right in the pan for extra warmth and flavor.
Boost the pecans. Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the filling. This adds texture and a toasted, nutty bite throughout.
Add sweetness and structure. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the pecans. This helps create that caramelized, gooey layer you want from a pecan dessert.
Top with cake mix. Evenly sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix across the entire surface. Don’t stir. Keeping it dry on top lets it bake into a crisp, buttery crust.
Finish with butter. Drizzle the melted butter slowly and evenly over the cake mix. Aim to moisten as much of the surface as possible. If there are dry spots, dot them with a little extra melted butter.
Bake. Place the dish on the center rack and bake for 35–45 minutes. It’s done when the top is golden brown and the edges bubble. If the top is browning too fast, tent loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
Rest before serving. Let the cake sit for 10–15 minutes. This helps the filling thicken slightly so it scoops neatly.
Serve. Spoon into bowls while warm. Add vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the full cozy effect.
Notes
Cool completely before storing to avoid condensation and sogginess.
Refrigerate: Cover the pan tightly or transfer to an airtight container. Keeps well for 3–4 days.
Reheat: Warm individual portions in the microwave for 20–30 seconds, or reheat the pan at 300°F (150°C) for 10–15 minutes to revive the crisp top.
Freeze: Portion into freezer-safe containers and freeze up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then reheat as above.
