Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a gentler option)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder (aluminum-free if possible)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce (or mashed ripe banana)
  • 1/3 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free, no added sweeteners)
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree (plain, not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional, skip for diabetic or very sensitive dogs)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 2–4 tablespoons water (as needed to loosen the batter)
  • For “frosting”: 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt + 2 tablespoons peanut butter, whisked until smooth
  • Optional mix-ins: finely shredded carrot, blueberries, or small diced apple

Method

  1. Preheat the oven: Set to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease it. This recipe makes about 8 standard pup cakes or 18–20 mini pup cakes.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk flour and baking powder to break up clumps and ensure even rise.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, applesauce (or banana), peanut butter, pumpkin, honey, and oil until smooth and creamy.
  4. Bring it together: Add dry to wet and stir gently. If the batter seems too thick, add water 1 tablespoon at a time until it’s scoopable but not runny.
  5. Add mix-ins (optional): Fold in a small handful of shredded carrot or blueberries. Keep pieces small for even baking.
  6. Fill the cups: Divide batter evenly, filling each well about 3/4 full. For mini pup cakes, use a small cookie scoop for neat portions.
  7. Bake: Standard pup cakes bake for 16–20 minutes. Mini pup cakes take 10–13 minutes. They’re done when a toothpick comes out clean and the tops spring back lightly.
  8. Cool completely: Let them rest in the pan for 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack. Cooling fully prevents the frosting from melting.
  9. Make the frosting: Stir the Greek yogurt and peanut butter until smooth. If it’s too thick, add a teaspoon of water. If too thin, chill for 10 minutes.
  10. Frost and decorate: Spread a thin layer on each pup cake. For a cute touch, top with a blueberry or a tiny dog biscuit. Serve in small portions.
